One number tells you how efficient a data center is: PUE. Here's what it means, what good looks like — Google runs 1.09 while the industry averages 1.54 — and a calculator to work out your own.

What PUE means

Power Usage Effectiveness = total facility power ÷ IT equipment power. A PUE of 1.0 would mean every watt goes to computing; everything above 1.0 is overhead — mostly cooling, plus power-conversion losses and lighting. A facility running at PUE 1.5 burns half a watt of overhead for every watt of compute.

What is a good PUE for a data center?

The closer to 1.0 the better. Google's fleet averages 1.09 (2025), while the Uptime Institute's 2025 survey puts the industry average at 1.54. Anything under ~1.3 is generally considered efficient; under 1.2 is excellent.

How is PUE calculated?

Total facility power divided by IT equipment power. If a site draws 1,500 kW in total and its IT load is 1,000 kW, PUE = 1.5 — half a watt of overhead for every watt of computing.

Why is PUE controversial?

It measures overhead efficiency, not total impact — a facility can have excellent PUE while using enormous absolute energy or lots of water. It also excludes how the electricity is generated. It's a useful number, not the whole story.
